So first things first. sarah is back from mexico. praise lord. i missed her. Friday was Julia's cone of power show, it was really quite amazing. Paul and Daniel weaved in it. When they told me Julia was going to have weaves in her show i immediately thought fake hair and got REALLY excited, alas it was beautiful yarn weaving, which of course, worked best in the end. saturday josh had a birthday! happy birthday josh, it was a pretty sweet gathering at his house where he is constructing this amazingly weird ford model t out of found brass and bedposts. it was super awesome. josh's birthday also had the distinction in my opinion of having the best party snax outside of kates birthday, although, i have sneaky hunch the snax were provided by kate. then saturday morning was spent with stacy, thrifting, noshing, and smack gabbing. no pictures were taken. swept up in the lazy fun of morning. then cathy and matt came over. it was matts 29th birthday! yay! happy birthday friend! we partied till the sun came up, well sort of, me not so much, but king tut has adopted matt as his new owner and loves me none, he was consumed with his hair and wonderful boy body smell. king tut is a sucker for a smelly pit. cathy played homemade movies of her friends doing fashion style advice inside of st. vinney's. it was like tmz and the wonder years all at the same time. cathy is my new favorite person. matt makes me miss brooklyn, he has the vibey vibe. its so funny, i remember going to see him play at the warsaw with heather in like 2004. its a small world. i miss brooklyn. i could go for some moto house eggs. fuckitz, or diner root veggie suckatash its sunday, afterall. this ones my favorite cos its quiet and not like their other stuff. although i do like the puppett rock opera that they did at the bienniel. what can i say? im a fan.
"i got my sweater at express fair and square!" jamie if u read this, ur the bomb, 1999 high school football stadium style.! happy birthday! KATE! midnite birthday! the new look for 2009: slash erotics i saw patrick there though! i hadn't seen him since ny. patrick saved my life when i was 25. that is for real, not a funny. i returned the favor by taking this horrible picture of him. he's very talented, humble and handsome and my photography skillz do no justice. i <3 patrick. rachel and papi chulo! the tiny creatures opening was insane and a little not my thing. dare i say it was KRAFT-y? It was still fun though. ps, im blog retarted and dont know how to make the photo descriptions line up. sowee.
So I just finished reading Sasha Frere Jones new blog post about Sinead O Connor and it totally blew my mind for two reasons, 1- I love Sinead O Connor and have been a major fan since I was introduced to Lion And the Cobra about five years ago. Previous to that I just thought she was nuts and sang Nothing Compares to You, since, she has become one of my favorite musicians in the world, Lion and the Cobra is often one of the major contenders on my ever rotating, theoretical, holy, desert island disc list. I think it probably, if worse came to worse and the boat was sinking and I had to jump into the water, hold LATC in my right hand and B52's Wild Planet in my left, take a last look then toss Wild Planet into the abyss, tuck LATHC into my bra and start swimming. It's like the Great Gatsby, or The Handmaids Tale, about as perfect as a piece of art can get. The other reason the post was great is that Sasha pointed out the very important fact that in the clip he posted, in which Sinead is performing at the Grammy's, Sinead is trying her hardest to sing above a pre-recorded track of her own voice, to break free from what she probably, most likely feels is an artistic prison. The antithesis of creation: regurgitation. Through the clip you can see her fight the song and the performance takes on an electric, defiant quality. She wins. But as the nineties rolled closer, Snead's integrity and unwillingness to play into the corporate game would destroy her commercially, she retained a huge fan base and still dose, but she could never move past her perceived missteps. It makes you realize how much the music industry is not aligned for artists, real ones -similar things happened to Fiona Apple- and how unless you are willing to shape shift, you've got your work cut out for you. Even in the music industry, a breeding ground for ego's, maniacs, drug addicts and chauvinists, Sinead was just too much of an unfamiliar woman. It was her passion in her art and her intellectualism, it was her willingness to challenge authority, even the authorities giving her her supper, it was obvious from the beginning that her rebellion against 'the man' was more than just a shaved head, that was probably embraced only because of her beauty. Sinead is a badass. Let the industry crumble. Let all the big labels go under. There's nothing to miss. Viva music. Click on Sasha's link under 'peeps' to the left to read his post. Troy, my favorite Sinead song from LATC.
I have cats coming out of my ears. This is my daily wake up call. Marlowe at the window scratching at the glass for breakfast, I defy anyone to find a more irritating sound. I have to hand it to him though, it's effective. Adam had an opening at workspace, it was awesome. It was a pitch dark nature adventure with candles. Very cool, it smelled excellent, like Christmas, candles, the forest and drippy water. We then went to this five thirty three thing downtown -i think thats what it was called- i only took this picture cos it was the same o'l people i see all the time. you know, a bunch o' silly artists in some silly outfits playing at not being silly. Life has been easy since the new year. not much to say. im poor until the 14th, living on a diet of miso soup, tangerines from the yard and iced tea. Ragged hopes and mangey sunsets. The days wind down at an early hour and the quiet of the evening takes me inside. I feel like this.
Below is one of the first songs that ever scared me, like gave me nightmares. I didn't buy Dirt until I was 17 because I was so scared of this song. I saw the video at my babysitters house, it was playing in the background while she was giving me a makeover, which I think consisted of intensely stiff aquanet bangs swooped into something she called the "banana leaf" and some sort of hyper color shirt with one of those hard loop ring things you'd pull the end of your shirt through. Anyway, I remember being in her room and the video for man in the box came on and i almost pissed my pants.
Also, I have new neighbors and they're super cool and from Georgia and they're a wee bit older. They are so Petula Clark, REM, B52's, eighties Atlanata Bruce La Bruce Funtown hotness. I think I might peak through these peoples windows. I'm a little star struck at their pure hot searing coolness. My new neighbors slay me.
im not even going to explain these things, except to say that my outfit theme for last night was extra in a chris issac video. my teeth r chattering from so much redbull and my eyelids feel like anvils. i read all of hells angels when i got home because everyone else passed out and i of course had smoked an entire pack of cigs and swallowed more redbull than is probably safe. daniel fell down a bunch, grabbed at peoples legs from the ground, tried to make out with his friends, laughed more than ive ever seen a human laugh, then hit his head on a table. it was amazing. kate broke a glass at midnight and got the nasty dance moves on the floor. sarah squabbled with a drunkard. her and i drove into the night party hopping and november rain and prince screaming, thanx Jack FM for the most excellent commercial free flashback new years! someone named rachel detroit who is a dead ringer for joan jett was ON and it all came from a small plastic bottle with something that looked like pink vodka. i might have spied some mysterious white powders. we discussed chinese democracy and she gave me a cigarette. rachel i approve of u as a human, continue on your journey! paul gellman danced alone with his eyes closed in the corner singing grace jones. josh and i decided that if the apocalypse happens and we all start eating human flesh, paul should be our Quing and Leader. A new title for new times and a new man. to hell with it! hedi scrambled around his beautiful house trying to save his furniture and records from the massive amounts of people who poured into his intimate dinner party. jamie and josh started a dance cirlce. sayer flipped me the bird and was surprisingly pulled together. sarah and i lost jason in koreatown at a party, my last image of him from last night is being led down an ominous hallway, looking sheepishly over his shoulder. stacy rolled around on the floor with danial and looked AMAZING. and paul turned 25. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAULIE POCkETT I LOVE U!!!!! Happy New Year!!!!! Dream Big!
