What Good is Sitting Alone in Your Room?
ps i am still experiencing severe photobooth addiction.
The celebrity I've been told I look like the most is undoubtedly Liza Minnelli, which I am totally 100 million percent A Okay with. I should be so lucky. Although I only think this is because we both have noses of a certain 'size' and funny cartoon eyeballs. The funny thing is that the celebrities my mom has gotten her entire life are Elizabeth Taylor, Natalie Wood and Liza- yes my mom was ridiculously beautiful in her younger days clicka me!, and still is, I think :) - So who knows. To be fair it really only happened in high school when I had Liza's famous pixie cut and was dying that shit black. For serious I had black hair for five years! Sometimes I'd get an itch to bleach it and then put some red or purple eggplant kind of color in there, but I always went back to blue/black. After Liza it would have to be Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, but again, that was mostly really in high school- my only other real hairstyle was the Betty Page, Uma Pulp Fiction bob. And again I think it's really just because we have schnozes and cartoon eyeballs. ANYWAY, here's Liza marching in a Gay Pride parade in France. God, she is fucking BADASSS. I have and will always love love love Liza. And of course, Cabaret is my favorite musical. Love that Bob Fosse.
So this post is a mish mash of lots of random crap, so bear with me. With the sadness surrounding Michael's death a review I wrote for the Weekly had to be shelved, as obviously the music department went into overdrive with Michael's passing, so I've decided to post it here.
I love Emily and Wounded LIon, they are just soooo good:
If Nashville Skyline Bob Dylan and Lion and the Cobra Sinead O Connor had a music baby, it would sound a lot like Emily Lacy. Add a twist of Joanna Newsom and a dash of the Pogues and you get a taste of what Lacy’s new beautiful album Armor sounds like. All hand made “by myself” chirped Lacy, at last nights Echo Curio show, “Oh god, I sound like a four year old” she self consciously mocked a beat later, the sound though is nothing but professional. The spirit of the DIY stops at the cellophane wrapper. Inside are layered and intricate songs that could honestly be on any list of “Best Albums of 09”. It’s that strong. Last night’s performance only solidified what the folks at Machine Project, where Lacy recently completed a two month residency, have known for awhile, that Lacy is an unbridled, exciting new artist on the brink of something groundbreaking. Unfortunately the next two acts on last night’s bill, Missincinatti and Cryptazice didn’t have much of a chance following Lacy’s intense and moving performance. It should be noted though that Cryptacize, Chris Cohen’s, post Deerhoof project, had some wonderful moments of soaring vocals and super tight hooks and melodies, but at the risk of being stoned and flogged- I have a hunch that the packed show was the result of Cryptacize whose album received a very favorable Pitchfork review- I don’t really get what all the fuss is about. They’re like armpits, I’ve got mine and you’ve got yours.
The evening seemed as if it belonged to Lacy, but local art gonzo’s Wounded Lion weren’t going down without a fight and turned out one of the most blistering, magnetic performances I’d seen since, well, two acts earlier. The chemistry of Wounded Lion is magical, watching each member rotate on each instrument as if a band was simply a game of musical chairs and to have each member attack each instrument with the fear that his life depended on it, and to play each instrument so well, is indicative of a group that understands the power of performance. Lyrics like a ‘a hundred years of potato chips a hundred years stale’ link them solidly to their musical spirit animal, The Talking Heads. Wounded Lion exists in a world of the absurd and their performances are like beacons guiding you toward the Da Da light.
Amazing Emily Interview. Viva DIY!
ps, no more pictures of myself for awhile i promise. the combination of finally understanding how to use facebook plus the acquisition of the mac iphotobooth have turned me into an image vain obsessed monster. arg. me eat your brains with my lame image obsessed attitude! arg, give me brains!
pps there's a reason ive posted these pictures, they are EXTREMELY flattering and i don't really look like this in real life, well, on occasion when i spend hours getting ready in front of the mirror and then i carry like some gum and a toothpick to like, hold it all in place. but in actuality i'm more excited by the tricks of the camera and the power of knowing my 'good side' thanx Elle magazine. You were good for somthin! long explanation later, i feel lame and shitty and am conflicted about vanity, why should we feel all weird about it? who knows, thats a feminist blog post for another day!
This is kind of more what i really look like. :)
It's true, you are! Just the most beautiful thing.

What Can I Possibly Say? R.I.P
Sarah said it best, everything has changed. I've never felt so lucky to be how old I am. I remember. I was there, on the schoolyard. I lived it.

MacBook the knife
Sorry for the major lag in bloggins, I've mostly been goin to shows and there's only so many blurry pix i can take with my shitty camera before even im bored. So in any event, here's a jumbled mess of stuff I've been doing the past week and a half. Telepathe played in Costa Mesa and Christene and Cathy and I took a field trip out to see them. Dennis met us there. They played with Nite Jewel again and they fuckin shredded. It was amazing. Anyhoo, mixed in here is the Room a Loom show at Workspace, Larry Johnson at the Hammer, Ooga Booga Teenage Teardrops thing, the Sleepy Sun, Entrance show at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts click me! and finally, without further adiu, I got a Mac Book for my birthday and have been going insane with the photobooth. Holy shit this thing is sooo fun and addictive. So um, like, you know, excuse my beauty. If you don't know where that's from, google it homes.
But mostly I've been very uninspired to shoot pics of people when im hanging out in intimate situations. For instance, Chris put the kabosh on the camera the second i took it out of the purse. One day I'll get the secret LA Record lair on film. Sometimes its best to let my memories do the remembering.
Oh yeah, I'm obsessed with the new Hecuba video. And in homage to their homage i'm posting my fave Kenneth Anger. Viva!

Hard Promises
So this past weekend was actually lots of fun! Semiotext had a reading at Mt. Bar in Chinatown and Sarah read an excerpt from her highly anticipated novel! Very exciting :) and then Sascha and Sarah and i went to see Nite Jewel Abe Vigoda and Telepathe at the Smell on Saturday. Even though it was hot as hell inside the Smell and Telepathe had sound problems it still was lots of fun. And Busy and Mellisa are amazing live. They're moving here and I'm so excited I could barf!
Anyway, last night I had a special just for me night, I rented the Peter Bogdonavich documentary on Tom Petty called Runnin Down a Dream and I have to say, I was super impressed. It was sooooooooooooooo good. Anyone who knows me knows that, despite what I post on this here blog and one would think my fave band/musician would be GnR, but actually it's not. I actually am very conflicted about GnR, which is why I've academically pursued them, Axl Rose intrigues me, why am I simultaneously attracted to his music and disgusted by it at the same time, anyhoo, my FAVE band musician of ANYTHING OF ALL TIME and I'm a little embarrassed to say it's not a woman, is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, so I'd been wanting to see this thing for a while. It's very good. I highly recommend it. And no, just to answer any future questions, I don't like Bruce Springsteen, I think he's overrated and I hate the sound of his voice. It's like a cat who smoked too many cigarettes. Tom's voice though I can listen to all day for the rest of my days until I fall into forever sleep.
Also, my friend Mike looks just like Tom Petty and I'm pretty sure that one of the reasons I love him so much is that his face makes me feel warm and cuddly.
Mike. Warmth and cuddles, no?

Mother
So Danzig, I haven't really talked about Danzig on here too much cos what am i going to say? 'Oh, Danzig rulzz, double z' well, duh, ya know, it's Danzig. It's kind of like why I don't really pump the Misfits on here, it's kind of a given, if you like rock n roll, thumpy bass and punk and at any time have desired a pompador, you probably like the Misfits and Danzig, if you think James Dean is cool and Elvira is hot, you like Danzig. So, obvs, ya I like Danzig.
So here's a little love, just cos.
And then Erika ripping it a tiny asshole. I love that she re-appropriates male songs.
And finally Telepathe is playing tonight at the Smell. It's going to rule.
Here's a small interview I did with Busy for the Weekly. click me!
Enjoy and stay out of the rain!

Holy Shite!
To quote Cathy, OMG!- so awhile back I did a post about how pop doesn't have to suck, pop can be amazing and powerful and still retain artistic integrity- orchestrated pre-packaged pop SUX! click here to read it
Anyhoo, I'm loosing my shizz cos three of my fave ANYTHING are coming together to collaborate and I can't fucking wait to see what they do. How amazing is this shit going to be. It's totally going to blow all the other crap out of the water.
ps I saw LeTigre live from the wings of the Wiltern with Sarah in 2003 and it was AMAZING.
And whatever it sounds like when it comes out, I'm totally going to look like this dancing to it, and hopefully Sascha will join me!
ps, These were taken by Olivian at Sayer's party this weekend. Thanks Olivian!
