Wildness!!

OMG! No, your eyes do not deceive you, I did just write omg, anyway, last night was the last wildness of 2008 and it was insane. Tons of funz. Fo reals.
I booty shaked.

And took my picture with the king. Glory be thy name.

Kate's students gave her a fucking American Express card for her birfday. Awesome. Seriously, I had seconds of jealousy.

This is Katie telling the story of the worst/cruelest thing she ever did as a kid, and it's actually not that bad, but pretty awful at the same time. The best part was that it took her like ten minutes to tell a really short story because every time she got the to the part where she was going to tell me the bad thing, she would stop and bust up laughing. It was hilarious she just couldn't say it. Clearly, Katie's conscious is racked with guilt.

Sarah and Sayer are trying to tell me something. Maybe goodnight and put the fucking camera away?

Coming Through In Waves

I am chilly, wrapped in a blanket and drinking mint tea. The boys are asleep in a ball, Marlowe is asleep under the porch, dry and toasty, while it rains buckets outside. I'm utterly comfortable. Not much to say, except, another awesome weekend.
We went to Sarah's friend, Carthic's(sp)final project party at Art Center. It was huge and catered with the most delicious spread of Indian Food. The art was really nice too. I actually liked it a lot. Interpret that however you want.
Then on Saturday it was beautiful Kate's 27th birthday, but I forgot my camera! There was fondu and tons of deliciousness. Happy birthday Kate!
The next night I went to go see On Holiday play and I fuckin forgot my camera, I was soooooo pissed. On Holiday has gone through a bit of a lineup change, now it also includes Brendan from the Antarticans and Crooked Cowboy, plus the addition of some weird instrument called a Celeste. I am not joking, if u see that On Holiday is playing GO SEE THEM LIVE! They are the BEST band in Los Angeles right now, I cannot even tell you how amazing the show was, Marianne is a real artist, the kind of person who creates without thinking about audience, product or notoriety, she creates in a vacuum of intensity, she is cray cray like a real artist and concerned with the process and the result as in, is it something she can stand behind and live with. Does it bring her joy and was it worthwhile to create. These are the things that make me wonder if she will ever become commercially successful, but in any event, you MUST GO! It is breathtaking to watch them, they rule it so hard.
Then Sunday night i had dinner with Paulie and Daniel at Adam and Julia's, beautiful magic house. Their friend Sean was visiting from Brooklyn, and we heard stories about Rhode Island and farmhouses and freezing cold winters where you hide under mountains of blankets and never move from that one spot in the bed that will cocoon u all night. It made me miss the east coast, but then I quickly rejoiced in the fact that it is, in all honesty, pretty easy here, winter wise, and it's nothing a cup of hot mint tea, two fat kittens and a big quilt can't fix.

Sascha and I are hair twins. She is the fierce.

Burger was in party mode! Burger... awww. I wuv her.

Julia made this persiman, ginger, lemon, lime fruit salad that was seriously, amazing.

Mr. Johnson was a big hit. A big fat, furry, orange hit.

Box Of Rain

This weekend was tons of fun. i feel like the city is sliding into itself. my house is a disaster and my cats are insane and im the brokest broke joke of any joke ive ever cracked, but i feel like a diamond. during the past three months i spent doing research for the appropriate for destruction piece i read this cheesy g n r book and in it slash is quoted as saying, "you know, we had no money, we all had stds, homeless and most of the time crashed in our rehearsal space wasted, but we were together and we were like brothers, before everyone hated each other, it was the happiest time of my life."
I'm writing a review of American Beauty by Grateful Dead and I'm a little intimidated by it, I've never been well versed in the hippie culture. I like it, peripherally, but I've always been more of a punk rock, heavy metal, 90's indie rock, rockabilly kind of chick. The Gram Parsons and such, I usually left those interests to the boyfriends and gypsy chicks that walked barefoot through the hallways in my high school, ridiculous flowers from the dirty parking lot in their hair.
Paul took amazing photos of me and the baby boys.

Then Kate and I hosted the first ever Five Points reading at Workspace. Five readers in Lincoln Heights next door to the Five Points (or Cinco Puntos, as I called it in high school) get it?
It was a smash. Sarah read this amazing piece about the grotesque and Travis read his outstanding poetry.

The next night we went to Animal Shelter reading to celebrate it's release. Chris Kruas read as well as Paul Gellman, who was so off the hook it was awesome. And of course Sarah, who read the If Looking Like Move, piece. It was wildly good. It's really exciting to see how far her work has come since we were youngsters, her doing copy and me, bad music reviews at Strength Skateboard Magazine. I feel very lucky to get to witness the transformation.

Kate and Sascha were there. Those are stand up gals. Also, Cathy De La Cruz moved to town from San Diego, praise lord! She's not the only one though, Japanther has left Brooklyn, and they can be seen stalking the streets in shirts like this.

Say A Little Prayer For Me

This is it guys, send all your positive energy my way. Cross your fingers and your toes that this massive year in the making B52's opus, that Axl Rose so rudely interrupted, is green-lighted. Say 33 1/3 under your breath three times before you go to bed tonight and throw salt over your shoulder. Come on David Barker, ring my bell.
If I get this, it's like winning the rock crit lottery.
Ah, now that I've finished that most intensities in 10 cities (to quote the Nuge)I can set aside all my GnR albums and let go of that horrible youthful revisiting- ugh, at one point while writing that thing I felt like a character in a Judy Blume novel- Adolescence is uncomfortable and I'm more than happy to be able to return to my adult self, where The B52's are my favorite band, I dig High Places, Gang Gang Dance, Gangi, Mika Miko, Jail Wedding's, Erase Errata, Entrance and Health and all the other bands of my peers. Where I'm not haunted in the middle of the night by red heads in leather chaps and the snarl of one someones hellish devil screech, where I'm not 22, drunk, running through an ally in Hollywood. Where I am boring, in graduate school and an occasional buyer of expensive candles. Where I eat soyrizo and don't steal.
To read all about my near fatal total regression into my early 20's, be sure to pick up the Believer Music Issue, which won't be out for about 5 months.
In the meantime, I'm going to be 28 and listen to my Will Oldham album's, and contemplate the merits of Brian Eno and Marnie Stern.

OBAMA!

Fuck YEAH!
Obama is rolling out the sweetest cabinet to ever fill the white house. I feel like re naming it the PEOPLE house because it's the first face of government that looks like the PEOPLE in my neighborhood, it literally looks like America.
My beloved, beleaguered, tough as nails Hillary
FUCKING BILL MOTHERFUCKING LATINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RICHARDSON (sorry Hill)
Susan Rice
Eric Holder Jr.
Janet Napolitiano as secretary of HOMELAND SECURITY!!!!!!!!
Plus a myriad of other folks who look the way I want my government to look. Am I nerd if I feel a small amount of hope for the future? I read Bill Richardson's name this morning and I wanted to cry, it was like Obama saved at least three iceburgs and half a rainforest plus let one little brown child see a face he can look up to, instead of the racist fucking stereotypes about Latino men that litter the media. I literally am quite pleased to be a Mexican American this morning, not even LA mexican (because I'm not) but a motherfuckin RANCHERO, Bill Richardson's kind of Mexican, even if half my Sopa is half milk and white bread.
